David Hann, OCT, FabLearn Fellow

I’ve been teaching for the Toronto District School Board since 2004, and have been designing maker experiences for my students since I started. I hold two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Toronto, in history & philosophy, and in education. I also took 3 additional qualification courses in Design & Technology leading to a DT Specialist designation. Over the 300 hours of coursework, I learned safety procedures, design skills, collaboration, and had time to make things I could use back in class.

I teach grade 8 math, grade 7 and 8 computers, and grade 6, 7, and 8 Design and Technology at Donview Middle Health & Wellness Academy. Over the last few years I have tried a few innovative approaches to my teaching practice, including using 3D Printing, and doing an integrated project to create Pinball Machines in grade 8.

I currently run the school website, and I am working on a complete overhaul of the site. I also manage the school's social networking, and I am developing a social media strategy. I run the school Tech Team that helps with various IT tasks, including Video Production and 3D printing. I am also the school Report Card Administrator (RCA), and I manage the school's D & T lab (aka wood shop / makerspace).

As a Digital Lead Learner in the TDSB I was chosen to help provide technology PD and leadership to my colleagues. Besides DLL PD I’ve presented at several conferences and workshops over the last 5 years, including the Educational Computing Organization of Ontario, the University of Western Ontario Math Department, the Maker Educators of Toronto Area, and locally in my school. Topics have included Making in Education, Makey Makey, 3D printing, Coding in Elementary Schools, Google Apps for Education, and iPads.

I attended the first Maker Ed conference at Intel headquarters prior to Maker Faire Bay Area in 2014. This year I was instrumental in the creation of the MakerEdTO group, including helping to organize a free summer conference for local Toronto/Ontario teachers interested in developing maker skills and networking with other maker educators.

In September of 2016 I was accepted to join the second cohort of the FabLearn Fellows - a digital fabrication in education program out of Stanford University’s Education Department. The FabLearn Fellows are experienced educators in formal and informal learning spaces world-wide who contribute to research about making and makerspaces in education and the development of open-source educational resources for their peers.
